They Used to Call it "Paradise"
Lamu, Kenya was a properous island community for centuries. All that came to an end with the invention of the steamship, which altered trade routes in the Indian Ocean in favor of Mombasa on the mainland. Lamu’s residents remain fiercely loyal to their former “paradise,” despite the fact that these days most of them are desperately poor.
